Are Outages Really Decreasing? Here's What the Data Says

When it comes to uptime, perception and reality often don’t match.
We compared 2024’s full-year data with the first 8 months of 2025 — and the results are surprising:

2024 Uptime Overview

  • Uptime rate: 98.53%

  • Downtime: 1,000,000+ hours

  • 39% of organizations faced at least one outage

2025 So Far (Jan–Aug)

  • Uptime rate: 94.47%

  • Downtime: 12,339 hours

  • Only 15% of organizations experienced any outages

So what’s going on here?
Although the uptime percentage appears lower in 2025, the total downtime and incident frequency are dramatically better.

This highlights a crucial insight:

Aggregate uptime percentage ≠ operational reliability.

It's not just about aiming for 99.9%. It's about minimizing real disruptions and ensuring outage resilience.

What This Means for Infra Teams:

  • Monitor beyond uptime percentage

  • Track incident frequency + severity

  • Focus on alert response time and mitigation, not just availability
